Most of us got a little lost getting our bearings to the Stellenbosch Flying School, but once there we had the use of some of the light aircraft as props – no flying though. Today we had two male models and one female model. The clothing had an aviator feel and was mostly earthy tones. The sun was already high in the sky with no clouds about, so out came the battery pack. This was a Top Gun type shoot, two daredevil guys, one woman but without real jets these guys were more like the adventurous types than supremely cool fighter pilots. Permission was granted to shoot near the airfield but we had to promise not to go wondering onto the actual airstrip. It could be life threatening if we got in the way of a landing plane, me thinketh. In the last shot we have a light aircraft on the runway about to take-off – in the same issue we have a speed boat in the background of our Lee-Ann shoot (so all in all a bit of the real action crept into otherwise planned shots in the same magazine issue!). On the day of the shoot I had to make decisions fast and make them work. We decided on the angles and included a larger decommissioned plane in our shots – although it doesn’t fly, it still has a majestic quality that we put to good use.
